Insurance and coverage

Benefits language is deliberately confusing. Here is how to find out what you actually have, in about ten minutes.

Plans clients commonly use

  • Blue Cross
  • ComPsych
  • First Nations Health Authority
  • Green Shield Canada
  • Manulife
  • Sun Life
  • Most other insurance providers

This is not an exhaustive list and it is not a guarantee of coverage. Your plan, not your insurer, decides what is reimbursed.

How reimbursement works here

Sessions are paid at the time of the appointment. You receive a receipt showing the therapist’s name, registration number and college, which is what insurers ask for.

You submit that receipt to your provider and they reimburse you directly. Most plans accept online or app submission, and most reimburse within a few business days.

Employee assistance programs

If your employer offers an EAP, it usually covers a fixed number of sessions through their own provider network before your regular benefits apply. Worth checking, because it is often the fastest route to a first appointment.

No benefits at all

Ask about the sliding scale. It exists for exactly this situation and it is allocated case by case. See fees.

Worth checking too

Psychology-only coverage can still work here

Plenty of workplace plans name Psychologists in their list of covered providers but say nothing about psychotherapy. People read that, assume they are not covered, and stop there.

Some of our psychotherapists are supervised by a Psychologist. For many plans, that supervision is what makes sessions claimable under psychological services. It is not universal, and it depends on your specific plan wording, so confirm it with your provider before you book.

Ask your provider these three questions

  • Does my plan cover services from a Registered Psychotherapist?
  • Does it cover psychological services delivered under the supervision of a Psychologist?
  • What is my annual maximum, and does it reset in January or on my policy date?

Book with confidence

Reception can tell you what to ask your provider before your first appointment.
